Associate Arts Editor – Financial Times (London)

The role

This is a vital role as the FT’s arts coverage moves into a new era, with an emphasis on digital strength, rapid responsiveness and international reach. You will be an outstanding arts journalist with an interest in all the areas covered by the FT, and a special focus on visual arts, the art market and collecting. You will be called on to perform the whole range of editing and production work, in print and online. On this small, dedicated desk, which produces daily print pages as well as a weekend section, an effective collaborator who can work at pace is essential.

 

Your skills

You are a skilled and experienced editor with a wide knowledge of and enthusiasm for the arts. You have the ability to edit efficiently and accurately at speed, and an interest in digital journalism. Excellent interpersonal skills are imperative to support successful liaison with outside writers and commercial partners, as well as in-house digital and visual teams. This is a full-time position within the FT’s arts team reporting to Horatia Harrod.

 

Key responsibilities

  • Commission and edit gold-standard arts coverage, including features, interviews, news and reviews
  • Maintain excellent relationships with existing contributors while bringing in new voices in the UK and around the world
  • Write features where required
  • Work closely with the picture editor and designer on all aspects of story presentation across print, mobile and digital platforms
  • Help to programme the arts stage at the FT Weekend Festival
  • Special responsibility for Collecting supplements (approx 10-12 a year). This might include not only commissioning and editing the print supplements and ensuring their best online presentation (including audio and video), but also liaising closely with advertising and marketing colleagues to ensure that we support this very profitable area.
  • The maintenance and extension of our arts media partnerships (currently four) – this involves interpersonal skills and continuous re-assessing of our involvement in the partnerships, possible travel to arts fairs, speaking on panels, representing the FT at events.
  • Development of new ideas and opportunities within this area.

How we work

Our hybrid setup means staff are encouraged to come into the office 3 days a week.

Our office is located across the street from St. Paul’s Cathedral and is easily accessible from all corners of London. There are the main train terminals such as Liverpool Street, Moorgate, Blackfriars, City Thameslink or Waterloo all situated within walking distance or there are several tube stations within a few mins walk such as Mansion House, St. Paul’s, Bank or Barbican.
