Business Journalist – Fixed Term: August 2025 – DC Thomson (Scotland)

DC Thomson is seeking a talented and creative journalist to cover the vibrant business community in the north-east and north of Scotland.

The focus of the team is to celebrate and shine a light on the most interesting companies and entrepreneurs in our patch – everything from start-ups to our largest local employers.

This digitally-focussed role is based in Aberdeen and we operate a hybrid working model. This is a fixed term contract lasting until August 2025.

The majority of content will be used on the Press and Journal website, although you may also be required to contribute to The Courier’s business coverage when required. This content will also be used in the newspapers’ print products.

The team is seeking to bring business stories to a wide audience and be a strong contributor to website traffic and subscriptions.

The stories the Business team covers tend to fall into five categories:

  • The human angle – business is all about people and the team has access to the interesting decision makers behind the scenes.
  • Achievable inspiration – people who have taken the plunge to start a business and found success.
  • Business updates – major news that has an impact, including issues like closures/job losses and concerns like inflation and energy costs.
  • Celebrating success – shining a light on our local companies who are creating unusual products, innovating to raise standards or making a big contribution to the local economy.
  • Property – updates on the housing market and commercial properties for sale.

This is a chance to write in a variety of styles, from hard news, to human interest stories and features.

The team also produces other formats like galleries, listicles and explainers, when appropriate.

This full-time role is varied – business touches so many parts of society. There are endless interesting stories to cover.

Another part of the role is supporting business events, which aim to help our local companies.

 

Requirements:

  • Have some curiosity about business
  • Confident in coming up with ideas and brainstorming
  • Happy to collaborate with other teams, such as our design team and social media experts
  • Create digitally-optimised content by making use of a range of multimedia tools, with story choices informed by data and insight
  • Build contacts and relationships with organisations and individuals
  • Help to promote and deliver events
  • Have some journalism experience, with experience of headline writing, SEO and social media useful
  • Driving license is a preference

This is a full-time, temporary position, working 35 hours per week from our Aberdeen Office.  The role presents the opportunity for hybrid working that must include regular office attendance.
