We are looking for an experienced Deputy Chief Sub Editor to join our award winning team at the Mirror. This is a fantastic opportunity for an experienced and highly skilled journalist and sub editor to play a pivotal role in the daily and weekend editing of this renowned national title.

This is a full-time role that involves working both Friday and Saturday each week, along with 2 to 3 other days/evenings on a rota basis, so a flexible approach is required.

This role is home and hub based linked to our London Hub. We are therefore open to candidates based in and around London.

Job Description

What will the role involve?

Reporting to the Chief Sub Editor (7 days), you will work across both the Daily Mirror and Sunday Mirror print editions every week, deputising for the Chief Sub when needed. You will write imaginative and effective headlines, always adhering to the Mirror’s branding and house style rules.

You will handle changing stories and updates with ease, editing copy quickly and accurately. You will also make sure all copy is legally sound and meets IPSO guidelines and the Mirror’s standards. You will assist the Chief Sub in the day-to-day management of the team, including rota planning, supporting professional development and cultivating a motivated environment.

Qualifications

Who are we looking for?

You are a highly skilled and experienced sub editor with a wealth of experience working within a fast-paced national newsroom environment. You will have extensive knowledge of print production, with a proven track record of sub-editing for national print titles. You have excellent grammar and a keen eye for detail and accuracy. You will also have experience in features subbing and rewriting.

You have the knowledge and skill to judge if copy needs to be edited and, when required, the ability to rewrite accurately and at speed. You are confident using systems such as InDesign, InCopy, CMS systems and image libraries. You can write accurate, hard-hitting and entertaining headlines and captions, always able to meet the very high standards the Mirror requires
