Digital Journalist, BBC News Urdu – BBC (Islamabad)

Job Introduction

BBC News Urdu is looking for a creative and passionate Journalist who will shape the digital and social media output of BBC News Urdu.

Based in our newsroom in Islamabad, Pakistan you will be working with various teams in Islamabad and across Pakistan, providing editorial and production support on social and digital output of BBC News Urdu gaining maximum valued reach for our audience while ensuring and maintining BBC’s editorial standards.

You will work with News Editors, Assistant Editors and Senior Journalists as an integral part of the team delivering digital news coverage.

Main Responsibilities

As a Digital Journalist you will research, report, write, translate, edit and adapt stories or programme material for publication in Urdu. Using your knowledge in metric analytics you will contribute to story ideas and inform video story choices that will have an impact with BBC News Urdu’s audiences.

Additional responsibilities include:

  • Undertaking interviewing and reporting duties, under broad direction in both recorded and live situations, in studio or on location.
  • Ensuring that BBC Editorial principles and all relevant legal, contractual and copyright requirements are met, referring up in case of difficulty or doubt.
  • Reversioning video content for different digital platforms.
  • Use analytics to inform video story choices and ensure the content is delivered in the right format(s).
  • Originate and organise ideas for video projects, from filming to processing of material for BBC News Urdu.

Are you the right candidate?

To be successful in this role applicants must demonstrate:

  • A full command and up to date knowledge of written and spoken Urdu as first (or equivalent) language as well as complete comprehension of written and spoken English and the ability to communicate effectively.
  • In-depth knowledge of data analytics and experience of using it to shape the content and meet the needs of different audience groups.
  • Demonstrable knowledge of Pakistan and South Asia affairs and the ability to lead the production of impactful original digital content as well as the coverage of major breaking news.
  • Experience of commissioning, editing, structuring and writing sharp, engaging news and current affairs in a range of digital formats and generating ideas to reach wider audiences.
  • To be able to write quickly, clearly and engagingly and sub-edit or rework scripts in Urdu that can be used by all platforms.
  • A successful track record of working in a digital production environment with demonstrable experience in social media and interactivity.
  • A clear understanding of the needs and profile of the target audience and the ability to translate these into imaginative and compelling content solutions in text, video and social.
  • Excellent social media and digital literacy, including digital video production, audience engagement and optimization on and off site.
  • Familiarity with the BBC editorial policy and practice, and of the laws relating to journalism, including copyright.
  • Ability to identify potential stories through social media platforms and lead the production of engaging content for BBC News Urdu’s audiences.
