Health Features Editor – News UK (London)

Your role: We have an exciting opportunity for a Health Features Editor to join our award-winning Health team. We want the most talented and committed journalists, and welcome applications from experts in the field. Working with a world-class team you will bring in great exclusives, generate original story ideas, while consistently beating the competition on the biggest breaking news stories.

 

Day to day you will:

  • Generate fresh story ideas, hunt down exclusives, uncover compelling angles and spot talking points that will engage, inform and surprise our readers
  • Write regularly across all platforms from longer reads and comment to major investigations, campaigns and special reports
  • Draw on a strong news sense to write around the big health stories of the day – adding context and colour to bring the basic lines to life
  • Commission and work with writers, reporters and medical experts to ensure every piece of content is informative, accurate and engaging
  • Edit and fact-check articles to make sure they are accurate, clear and authoritative
  • Ensure all Health content is visually appealing, through the use of graphics, pictures, video and interactive tools
  • Responsibility for weekly health content in The Sun and Fabulous magazine
  • Help develop talent and support the progression of reporters on the team

 

What we are looking for from you:

  • Exceptional writing, editing, and proofreading skills, coupled with a meticulous eye for detail
  • An in-depth knowledge of the health and medical world, trends and issues, alongside genuine passion and contacts book to back it up
  • Enthusiasm, imagination and a notebook bursting with ideas are all essential
  • A proven ability to work under pressure, to tight deadlines with rigorous accuracy
  • Experience of commissioning content across all platforms with a sharp focus on attracting digital audiences
  • A strong understanding of The Sun, with the ability to write brilliant headlines in the famous Sun style
  • Proficiency in digital tools including video, a deep knowledge of social media, SEO and online publishing
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to cultivate relationships with colleagues, sources and leading experts
  • Being a self-starter is key – you will need to thrive under the pressure of a busy newsroom and be motivated to go above and beyond
  • A positive can-do attitude is essential, you will need to be proactive, use your initiative and work well as part of a team
  • Commitment to upholding the highest standards of journalistic integrity and ethical reporting, a thorough knowledge of the IPSO Code of Conduct, media law and ethics
  • Willingness to work flexible hours over a seven-day rota pattern
