News Reporter – The Times and The Sunday Times (Glasgow)

News Reporter

The news reporter is responsible for producing high quality journalism, breaking exclusive stories and pitching and delivering long form ideas and investigations across a broad range of areas. This job will work as an integral part of the Scottish editorial team in a digital-first environment.

Responsibilities

  • Cover major news stories across a broad range of areas
  • Write accurate and engaging copy to strict deadlines for digital and print audiences
  • Consistently pitch agenda-setting exclusive stories and investigations to the news desk as well as exclusive video, polls, interactive graphics and picture gallery ideas to engage our digital audience and plan how these stories are shared and promoted online
  • Build and maintain excellent contacts
  • Use social networking and other digital platforms for content generation and to promote The Times and The Sunday Times Scotland content
  • Successfully manage productive relationships with senior editors and the editorial team in Scotland and with digital and print journalists in London

Skills and experience

  • Experience writing for a national newspaper, magazine or major digital news publisher
  • Demonstrable experience writing and pitching ideas for a digital audience
  • Strong contacts and a proven ability to bring in exclusive stories
  • An understanding of how audience data supports pitching and how to promote a story on social media and through search engines
  • An ability to work under pressure, to tight deadlines
  • Reliable and prepared to put in extra time and effort where necessary
  • Keen attention to detail and meticulous fact-checking
  • Experience of working collaboratively with multidisciplinary teams
  • A strong understanding of editorial compliance and regulatory issues
