Production Journalist – Financial Times (London)

The role 

Our newspaper production team is looking for a skilled and experienced Production Journalist, sub-editing crucial news and analysis on the print pages; including writing headlines, editing copy for the front page, and crafting newspaper pages.

This entails fact-checking, cutting copy to fit the space and adding ‘furniture’ such as headlines, sub-heads and photo captions. Writing snappy, informative and entertaining headlines is a key aspect of the role. As well as proofreading pages to check for any ‘doubles’ of words or inconsistencies.

 

This is a full-time position, working mixed shifts from 11am-7pm, or 12pm-8pm. 

 

Key responsibilities

  • Consistently hit the highest FT standards of accuracy and quality without supervision
  • Ensure print deadlines are met for the International and UK editions
  • Write clear and engaging headlines, standfirsts, captions and other furniture
  • Liaise with news editors, writers and picture editors over changes and potential improvements to articles
  • When required, adapt layouts and source, place and size images
  • Revise graphics if assigned
  • If assigned, steer newspaper sections such as Markets, ensuring copy, charts and pics are correctly placed, completed to a high standard and sent for printing

 

Your skills

  • Highly skilled and consistent copy editor; outstanding attention to detail
  • Flair for newspaper headline writing, with awareness of difference from digital and also the distinction needed between straight news, analysis and opinion
  • Ability to work coolly under pressure
  • An understanding of the FT’s newspaper design principles, including the conventions appropriate to each section regarding use of straps and other furniture
  • Basic layout skills including the ability to adapt page designs, and to source, place and scale images on pages is desirable but not essential
  • You must have an excellent understanding of companies and markets coverage, economics and global affairs.

How we work

Our hybrid setup means staff are encouraged to come into the office 3 days a week.

Our office is located across the street from St. Paul’s Cathedral and is easily accessible from all corners of London. There are the main train terminals such as Liverpool Street, Moorgate, Blackfriars, City Thameslink or Waterloo all situated within walking distance or there are several tube stations within a few mins walk such as Mansion House, St. Paul’s, Bank or Barbican.
