Reporter, Visual Storytelling – Financial Times (London)

The role

We’re looking for a reporter to join our award-winning visual stories team.

Comfortable working collaboratively in an interdisciplinary environment, you will be confident combining reporting with design and data to deliver deep-dives, investigations and explainers in ground-breaking visual formats that delight and inform our readers.

With a track record of producing first class visual journalism, you are passionate about developing and realising story ideas and keen to take the team’s reporting to new heights. You’re an  enterprising and enthusiastic  individual who will work closely with the rest of the team to deliver projects at pace.

As well as writing your own stories, you will be excited by the idea of shaping the ideas of others and the prospect of working closely with the FT’s global network of reporters.

A normal week

  • Read the news and spot topics ripe for visual storytelling. This could be a big subject that transcends the daily news agenda, an investigation that uses computational techniques to set the news agenda or an underreported story that deserves to be told.
  • Check in with the FT’s specialist reporters to think about how we can combine visual storytelling techniques with great reporting to cover important stories on their patch.
  • Collaborate with colleagues in the wider visual and data team as well as FT reporters, designers and editors to research, write and shape these stories, and decide how visuals and text can be combined to best communicate their core findings to readers.
  • Work closely with the visual stories editor to plan, execute and ultimately deliver these stories.

Aptitudes

  • Excellent news judgement
  • Outstanding writing skills, including experience writing and editing for visual stories
  • Comfortable multitasking and able to work across various projects at the same time
  • Knowledge of global business, finance, economics, politics and related subjects
  • An awareness of the latest visual storytelling techniques
  • Excellent communication and people skills
  • The ability to clearly and articulately express ideas
  • A passion for newsroom collaboration
  • Numeracy, data handling and the ability to think statistically
  • Technical skills (front end development, advanced data handling, tool building, web scraping) desirable but not essential

About the team

The visual stories and investigations team is an interdisciplinary group of journalists using traditional and computational reporting to produce explainers, deep dives and investigations in visual formats.

Our projects are united by the visual elements, which play an essential role in communicating the story and help us explain topics in a way that goes beyond anything achievable with words alone.

Our work is incredibly varied. Exposing the scale of China’s suppression of Islam, explaining how AI is decoding the animal kingdom and revealing the miracle of modern chip manufacturing are examples of recent projects we are particularly proud of.

We work together to tell these stories, and our roles are loosely defined by our job titles. You might nominally be the reporter, but we welcome ideas and creativity in every aspect of a project.

Key relationships

The successful candidate will be part of the visual stories and investigations team. The visual stories team is made up of an editor, designer, two graphics journalists and two reporters. The investigations unit within the team is made up of a senior reporter, designer and graphics journalist. The visual stories and investigations team is part of the visual and data desk.

Please submit your application by the end of the day, Monday 29th July 2024.
