Senior commissioning editor, The Sunday Times Magazine – MAT cover

The Sunday Times Magazine is looking for a senior commissioning editor for a maternity cover contract.

The successful candidate will be responsible for the weekly Relative Values and A Life in the Day feature slots. They will also conceive and deliver original feature ideas, fix high-profile interviews, brief top writers and edit copy across The Sunday Times Magazine.

Applicants must have experience editing for a national newspaper or magazine. You will have first-class commissioning and copy-editing skills, with excellent contacts across entertainment and current affairs.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee the weekly Relative Values and A Life in the Day slots.
  • Commission and edit features for The Sunday Times Magazine
  • Chase and fix high-profile interviews for the Magazine across entertainment, politics and current affairs. This includes liaising with writers, PRs/agents and the picture desk to organise logistics, often working with people in different time zones
  • Demonstrate an understanding of what works best for digital, offering content that is truly distinctive and optimised for search
  • Commission video and liaise with the video team
  • Be reader-focused, commissioning content that engages subscribers and attracts new subscribers through search
  • Work with production colleagues in design, graphics, pictures, sub-editing and legal to produce Magazine content as efficiently as possible, meeting deadlines

 

Skills and experience

  • Experience working as an editor and fixer for a national newspaper or magazine
  • Experience in and a demonstrable passion for features journalism with good contacts in entertainment and current affairs
  • Highly organised and strong planning skills
  • Persuasive presentation skills, well-developed interpersonal skills, with the ability to problem-solve and negotiate positive outcomes
  • Good understanding of SEO techniques to maximise search results
  • Able to use social media platforms to engage current and new audiences for The Sunday Times Magazine
  • Able to communicate succinctly and effectively
  • Experience working collaboratively with multidisciplinary teams
  • A strong understanding of editorial compliance and regulatory issues
