Job Introduction

As Senior News Editor for Digital News, you will lead the 70-strong team responsible for 24/7 coverage of on-the-day and breaking news stories in the UK and around the world on BBC News digital platforms.

Reporting to the Executive News Editor, Digital Output, the role involves driving the daily news offer, working closely with the Digital Live, Curation and Commissioning teams to produce sharply focused, impartial and engaging stories in both text and video. You will also collaborate with BBC news content teams, as well as colleagues in Nations and Regions and the World Service, to help shape their coverage for digital audiences.

This is a job that requires excellent editorial judgement, creativity and the ability to motivate your team and others across the BBC to deliver world-class public service journalism on a daily basis.

Main Responsibilities

The main responsibilities for this role will be to:

– Lead a team of digital journalists delivering daily news output in text and video for UK and international stories

– Identify news priorities and opportunities, and help shape the key stories of the day for digital audiences

– Maintain the highest editorial standards, making sure our stories are framed well, clearly written and feature the best of the BBC’s reporting

– Work closely with editors in Curation and Live to co-ordinate coverage in real time, and develop effective working relationships with correspondents and reporters

– Foster a culture of innovation and support with direct reports as well as with wider teams

 

Are you the right candidate?

You will need to demonstrate the following key skills:

– Significant experience of directing daily news teams to deliver text and video coverage for digital platforms

– Excellent news judgement under pressure with a proven ability to spot the sharpest top lines and drive stories forward

– Extensive experience of working with reporters and editors across the UK and globally

– A clear understanding of digital analytics and how they can be used to shape journalism that reaches both existing and new audiences

– A proven track record of driving organisational and cultural change, and improving diversity and inclusion

– Ability to build close relationships with teams across BBC News
