The Express Online is looking for a Senior News Reporter to join their dynamic digital news team This is a fantastic opportunity to work for one of the country’s biggest news sites. The ideal candidate will have a proven track record in digital journalism at delivering brilliant exclusives and fantastic page views in equal measure.

We are looking for an experienced reporter – or highly talented trainee – who will be full of ideas for agenda-setting stories and instinctively know how to get the maximum possible audience out of everything they write.

You will be equally adept at covering everything from the war in Ukraine to over-tourism in Cornwall – all in a way that differentiates us from our rivals.

Ideally you will have experience writing for a national website or paper, agency or a busy regional title. We want someone who is highly motivated and organised as well as a strong writer and interviewer.

This role is home and hub-based linked to our London Canary Wharf hub. We are therefore open to candidates based in and around London.

Job Description

What will the role involve? 

  • Writing stories and features that will drive lots of traffic to our website
  • Bringing in exclusives and pitching ideas that will work for our audience
  • Covering breaking news quickly and accurately through live blogs and breakouts
  • Being versatile – as well as covering the day’s big stories we help our World News, Royal and Politics teams
  • Understanding audience analytics and the use of stats to dictate how we headline stories and how we shape newslists
  • As well as covering the biggest hard news stories of each day, you will write lighter trivia pieces and features which will generate a large audience at weekends and on quiet news days
  • Working a mixture of shifts including some evenings and weekends when required
  • Working with colleagues on our print team so that as much of what we do as possible can be used in the paper
Qualifications

Who are we looking for? 

  • NCTJ or equivalent journalism degree and knowledge of media law
  • A deep knowledge of and passion for current affairs, national and international news is essential
  • A strong understanding of the unique nature of digital news
  • Have an eye for detail to bring stories to life
  • A bursting contact book of excellent journalism contacts and sources
  • Someone who can work calmly and effectively under pressure
