Visual Journalist – Thomson Reuters (Australia)

Reuters Pictures is looking for a dynamic and talented Visuals Journalist to report from Australia and be based in Sydney. We are looking for a team player and a self-starter with plenty of initiative to generate story ideas and inject a creative approach to storytelling. She or he will have a good understanding of the news agenda in Australia – from politics and sports to entertainment, culture, lifestyle and business news.

The pictures and video news industry is going through a period of significant transformation, driven by the rapidly shifting habits of news consumers and ever-changing technology. The successful candidate should have extensive experience in photography and at least a basic knowledge of shooting video, as well as a desire and capacity to learn more.

We want someone who has excellent communication skills, an unflappable temperament, and a passion for visual journalism. She or he must be able to work closely with visuals colleagues and reporters.

About the Role

As a Visual Journalist, Australia, you are responsible for the following:

  • Ensure Reuters wins the biggest news stories and support the rich photojournalism of Wider Image storytelling in Australia.
  • Guide the pictures reporting in Australia and manage a network of freelance contributors.
  • Demonstrate flexibility and adaptability in responding to changing assignments including the ability to work under pressure with patience in complex situations.
  • Participate in covering stories with multimedia teams.
  • Pitch and develop story ideas on a wide range of subjects including climate change.
  • Ensure safety newsgathering protocols are followed and well-communicated.
  • Obey local laws and regulations when carrying out news reporting.

About You

As a Visual Journalist, Australia, you should possess the following:

  • Minimum four years’ experience in visual journalism.
  • Willingness to travel to breaking news stories, often at short notice.
  • Proven storytelling skills, and a desire to work on long-term, deeply reported stories.
  • Excellent news judgment and in-depth knowledge of the pictures business.
  • Good understanding of the latest digital technologies for photographing, filming, editing and transmitting visuals.
