Alex Crawford, Sky News special correspondent and patron of the NCTJ, will present this year’s Awards for Excellence.

The annual awards, which highlight the achievements of individuals with promising journalism careers ahead of them, will be presented on Friday, 4 April at a ceremony and lunch at Halle St Peter’s in Manchester.

Alex Crawford is a multi-award-winning journalist known for her frontline reporting from global conflicts and humanitarian crises.

She began her career at the Wokingham Times as an NCTJ trainee before moving to the BBC and TV-am, and joining Sky News at its launch in 1989.

Alex was appointed as the charity’s first patron in 2018 after she received the most nominations from journalists who were asked which living journalist embodies the values they respect and adhere to.

Alex said: “I consider being asked to be patron of the NCTJ as one of my proudest moments. The NCTJ qualification is, in my view, a badge of honour without parallel and a much-needed rigorous journalism foundation which is and should be highly valued in the workplace.

“I cannot wait to applaud the endeavours of the young journalists who have shown dedication, talent and promise. This is the most challenging time to be a journalist but it has also got to be the most exciting too with new horizons, fresh skills to master and multiple platforms on which to make an impact.”

Joanne Forbes, chief executive of the NCTJ, said: “We are honoured to have Alex Crawford, our esteemed patron and alumna, present this year’s Awards for Excellence. Her illustrious career and dedication to high-quality journalism serve as an inspiration to all aspiring journalists.

“We look forward to celebrating the talent and dedication of the shortlisted student and trainee journalists at this fantastic event.”

This year’s awards have been supported across the media industry, with Reuters as headline sponsor and award category sponsors including Alder Media, Yahoo, Sky News, i, the Market Research Society, News UK, British Polling Council, The Telegraph, Sky Sports and the Financial Times.

There are 82 on the shortlist across 22 categories, including news journalism, top scoop, podcast and videojournalism.

The awards celebration will be preceded by an accreditation seminar for course leaders and industry advisers to discuss the latest developments in journalism education and training.
