Can’t afford your journalism training? The Journalism Diversity Fund can help

The Journalism Diversity Fund was a beacon of hope for me at a time when I felt I could never afford journalism training. I didn’t have thousands of pounds to pay for a course and my future prospects did not look promising.

I was first introduced to the fund in 2009 by a lecturer at my university. I did not apply at the time because I didn’t think I would secure the funding. However, the most remarkable thing happened to me in 2010 when my partner and I had a baby. This spurred me on to fill out the application form. I had nothing to lose and everything to gain.

Fast forward a few months and I had been told I was successful at the interview and therefore would receive a bursary. I had my course fees paid for and I received help towards travel expenses and course materials.

Thanks to the fund I’ve recently completed the PgDip Newspaper Journalism course at the University of Central Lancashire. I had a great time on my course: I made some good friends and learnt a thing or two about the exciting world of journalism. I am now equipped with the fundamental tools required to practice as a professional journalist. Although I enjoyed the course – especially the digital module – I must be honest and say that the course was very demanding. It required 110 per cent commitment and dedication.

I am forever grateful to the Journalism Diversity Fund. Their help and support throughout the course has been immeasurable.
