Community news reporter up for award for three series of articles

Davina Jethwa has been nominated for three series of articles which focussed on different marginalised communities in Kent.

A community news reporter is in the running for an award for her coverage of marginalised groups on her patch.

KM Media Group journalist Davina Jethwa has been shortlisted for the Kent Voices Award in the Kent Press and Broadcast Awards 2024.

She has been nominated for three series of articles which focussed on different marginalised communities in Kent.

Davina said: “The category I felt really fit with what I am doing and I also had my editor say I should put myself forward.

“It’s a bit surreal because I have only been in this job for a little over a year. I don’t think it’s quite sunk in yet.”

The winner will be revealed at a ceremony on 26 July at The Spitfire Ground, St Lawrence in Canterbury.

Davina is flying back from a holiday in Budapest that day and will be heading to the event straight from the airport.

The 22-year-old, who was hired through the Community News Project (CNP), is working towards her NCTJ Diploma in Journalism at Darlington College alongside her work covering north-west Kent in the newsroom.

Announced in 2018, the CNP is a partnership between the NCTJ, Meta and regional news publishers to improve the diversity of UK newsrooms and support the coverage of underserved communities.

She said she has “really loved” the opportunity to tell the stories of people from underrepresented communities.

Davina’s editor Matt Ramsden said: “Davina has always shown great commitment to the communities she covers, so it’s rewarding to see her hard work recognised in this way.”
