The Journalism Diversity Fund is to work with Creative Access to support the new internship scheme.
The Journalism Diversity Fund is to work with Creative Access to support the new internship scheme.
Creative Access, a charitable organisation, was set up in 2012 by Michael Foster, managing director of The Rights House. It aims to provide opportunities for paid internships in the creative industries for young people from under-represented black, Asian and minority ethnic backgrounds.
The Journalism Diversity Fund is providing paid internships at regional newspapers for bursary recipients. Creative Access will provide matched-funding for interns from black, Asian and minority ethnic (BAME) backgrounds.
Joanne Butcher, NCTJ chief executive, said: “We are delighted to be working with Creative Access, as both organisations share the same objective: to increase diversity within the media industry. This support will help to ensure more Journalism Diversity Fund recipients have an opportunity to get meaningful paid work experience and a positive start to their careers.”
Michael Foster, Creative Access, said: “We are committed to creating opportunities for people from under-represented backgrounds across the media industry and we hope to extend our reach by part-funding the Journalism Diversity Fund internship scheme.”
Creative Access also funds internships in film, television, theatre, radio, PR and publishing.
The Journalism Diversity Fund internship scheme will be piloted for a year and will be extended if successful. Those wishing to apply must be a Journalism Diversity Fund recipient and have achieved the NCTJ gold standard (A-C grades in all modules and 100wpm shorthand).
