A student soon to complete an NCTJ-accredited course has won a place on the prestigious BBC journalism training scheme.
When Lee Morgan, 26, a student on the MA Journalism course at Salford University entered the race for a place on the prestigious BBC journalism training scheme last year, he was one of 2,000 aspiring journalists hoping to succeed.
Following a gruelling day of interviews and assessments in London, Lee later discovered he was one of just 15 people to appointed to the scheme: 11 on news and four in specialist areas such as sport and politics.
Lee started on the training scheme in November and has now been posted to the BBC in the North East. He believes he could eventually turn full circle and head to the BBC’s new MediaCity base in Salford, close to the university where he is completing his MA Journalism around the BBC training scheme.
Lee said: “I am based in Newcastle and I will be working with radio and online teams over the next year.”
“In my time at Salford, I had placements with Channel M, Granada News and the Manchester Evening News. I also sat NCTJ examinations in addition to module assignments.
“We were always encouraged to come up with our own story and feature ideas and I took some to the interviews in London, which seemed to impress! I started the MA in Salford hoping to kick-start a career in journalism and I am absolutely delighted with how things have turned out.
“It is a rare privilege to be on the BBC scheme and I intend to make the most of it.”
Lee joined the NCTJ-accredited Salford MA course in September 2008. He completed his PG Diploma in April 2009 and is currently completing an MA Journalism while working for the BBC.
