NCTJ ambassadors inspiring the next generation of journalists at careers events

NCTJ ambassadors are attending careers events up and down the country to inspire young people about careers in journalism.

The NCTJ’s new ambassadors are taking their passion for journalism on the road, attending careers events up and down the country to inspire young people about careers in journalism.

From the importance of NCTJ qualifications to the varied and rewarding opportunities within the industry, our ambassadors are sharing their experiences with the next generation of journalists.

Mirek Gosney speaking with pupils at a careers fair

At a recent careers fair in West Berkshire, Newbury News journalist Mirek Gosney spoke to pupils about the exciting future of journalism.

He said: “It was great to visit West Berkshire’s largest interactive careers fair, where journalism has always been in demand but underrepresented in previous years.

“I spoke to pupils from all backgrounds studying various subjects, some of whom were surprised to learn how transferrable their skills and passions would be in this industry. A popular highlight was the original issue of the Newbury Weekly News from 1874 I brought, but pupils were also keen to hear how video, AI and social media is changing today’s media landscape.”

Tomas Hill Lopez-Menchero at a languages fair

Tomas Hill Lopez-Menchero, junior European editor at The Athletic, attended his former school’s language roadshow to share how his language studies have been key to his success in international journalism.

He said: “I really enjoyed the chance to return to my old school to talk to pupils about the importance of studying languages while explaining how it’s helped my career in journalism.

“I use French and Spanish on a daily basis in my work as a junior European editor at The Athletic, so it’s a subject that’s close to my heart. I hope I was able to provide some encouragement to the next generation.”

Hayley Clarke with her former teacher

Another NCTJ ambassador, BBC journalist Hayley Clarke, also returned to her old school, where she reflected on how her teacher played a pivotal role in her career.

“It was so great to see my favourite teacher Mr. Jolley again, and to speak to his students about BBC apprenticeships and NCTJ qualifications,” said Hayley.

“He ignited my interest in politics and always encouraged and believed in me – there’s no way I’d be at the BBC without him.”

The NCTJ’s ambassador group was established this year as part of the NCTJ’s ongoing effort to champion quality, trust and diversity in journalism, ensuring young people from all backgrounds understand the opportunities available to them.

To support their visits to careers fairs and talks, ambassadors are armed with the NCTJ’s journalism careers guide, which offers advice on the skills and qualifications needed, the different paths into the industry, and the exciting opportunities on offer.
