NCTJ launches new careers guide to inspire next generation of journalists

The NCTJ has published a new edition of its journalism careers guide, sponsored by the Financial Times.

Distributed to schools, colleges, and job centres across the UK, this invaluable resource is designed to inspire young people to pursue careers in journalism and equip them with the knowledge to begin their journey.

The booklet is an invaluable tool for students, educators, and career advisors alike, and provides insights into the varied roles and training routes available.

Key features of the guide include:

  • An insight into journalistic specialisms
  • Information about the different NCTJ study routes, and listings of accredited courses
  • Advice from NCTJ-qualified journalists
  • Guidance on bursaries available through the Journalism Diversity Fund

This year’s cover star is Amrit Singh Mann, who works as a journalist at Sky News and is now an NCTJ ambassador.

Amrit, who completed his diploma as part of his apprenticeship, said: “The NCTJ part of my training has been invaluable. After completing my qualification, I returned to the newsroom as a more skilled, confident and all-round better journalist.

“Understanding the importance of accurate reporting and the relevant media law and ethics is essential. So, my advice to any aspiring journalists would be to consider completing an NCTJ course.”

To further the charity’s careers outreach efforts, the NCTJ’s ambassadors will distribute the guide at school careers fairs and other events across the UK.

The NCTJ’s ambassadors have been appointed to champion quality, trust and diversity across the media sector and to spread the word about the value of achieving an NCTJ qualification.

Joanne Forbes, chief executive of the NCTJ, said: ” Journalism plays a crucial role in society, and now more than ever, it’s important to encourage and nurture new talent from a diverse range of backgrounds.

“We are committed to providing young people with the tools and information to enter the profession and make a difference. We thank the Financial Times for their continued support, and our ambassadors for playing a vital role in our efforts by directly engaging and inspiring the journalists of the future.”
