Alex Whitehead, who completed the NCTJ photojournalism course at Sheffield College, last night won the Emerging Talent Award at the O2 Media Awards for Yorkshire and the Humber.

The Emerging Talent Award is a new category aimed at students studying media related courses at colleges and universities across Yorkshire and the Humber and attracted entries from budding newspaper writers, press photographers and film makers and social media developers.

The panel of judges commended Alex on his portfolio, saying: “Alex was selected because his work was both impressive in quality but also demonstrated that this was someone with a real eye for a news story. His portfolio was excellent and worthy of any professional photographer in the industry.”

Alex said: “I am delighted to win an award so early on in my career and I would like to thank Rob Rathbone for his help and support during my time on the NCTJ course.”

Alex was presented with his award, which also has the backing of the BBC, Press Association and Yorkshire Post Newspapers, by Emmerdale stars Fiona Wade and Bhasker Patel. The ceremony took place at the Northern Ballet Theatre in Leeds and was attended by more than 150 journalists working across newspapers, television, radio and specialist publications.
