The National Council for the Training of Journalists is entering an exciting new chapter and is to appoint a senior manager to help take the charity to the next stage of its growth.

The head of development will take the lead on income generating activities including fundraising, corporate partnerships, sponsorship and marketing.

Reporting to the chief executive, the head of development will join the senior management team who have collective responsibility for achieving the NCTJ’s strategic objectives and priorities agreed with the charity’s trustees.

Announcing the creation of the new role, chief executive Joanne Butcher said: “We have ambitious plans to enhance and extend our products and services in line with changes to journalism and the media.  This is a fantastic opportunity for a talented individual to have a serious personal impact on the charity’s income and progression.”

The head of development will be responsible for:

  • Generating income for the charity through business development activities, fundraising, corporate partnerships, sponsorship, new and improved products and services, and events and courses
  • Assisting the chief executive with the development of relationships with the charity’s stakeholders and membership
  • Increasing donations to the Journalism Diversity Fund and other charitable initiatives and projects
  • Overseeing the charity’s marketing and communications strategy including brand, profile, marketing and promotion of products and services.

The NCTJ is looking for a high-calibre communicator and team player with a proven track record in generating sustainable income streams that make a measurable difference.

Essential skills include commercial awareness, sales, fundraising, securing sponsorship, bid/proposal writing, networking and relationship building, and marketing and communications.

All members of the senior team need to innovate, instigate and manage change, people and projects, think strategically, multi-task, plan, prioritise, budget and work to strict deadlines.
