Our apprenticeship story: talkSPORT apprentices
We hear from talkSPORT's new apprentices on what they are looking forward to in their apprenticeships.
National Apprenticeship Week is taking place between 8-14 February, and the NCTJ is proud to support the campaign. Throughtout the week, we will be sharing first-hand accounts from current and former apprentices and employers to demonstrate the benefits of journalism apprenticeships.
talkSPORT launched a brand new apprenticeship scheme in September. Here, we hear from their three new apprentices Mya, Daniel and Janisha.

What are you most looking forward to about your apprenticeship with talkSPORT?
I’m most looking forward to doing something I love! People say you’ll never work a day in your life if you’re doing something you enjoy and I truly believe this will be the case with talkSPORT. I think the social media aspect of the apprenticeship is what I’ll feel most comfortable with however I am looking forward to pushing myself out of my comfort zone, especially for production.
What will you be learning and working on throughout your apprenticeship?
I think throughout my time during my apprenticeship I’ll be specifically looking to improve my technical editing/production ability. I feel like I’m a fairly confident person and if I were to get thrown on air tomorrow then I would probably be able to manage, however I have absolutely no experience with everything that goes on behind the scenes so I’d love to work on that the most ideally.
Why do you want to work at talkSPORT?
I want to work at talkSPORT because I have a huge passion for sport, and a huge desire to work in the media… so I don’t think there is a job better suited to me! Growing up I have always listened to talkSPORT, so to finally have the opportunity to work for a station that I’m a fan of, is such an incredible opportunity.

What are you most looking forward to about your apprenticeship with talkSPORT?
I’ve been most looking forward to meeting all of the hardworking people that work for the company and making so many new friends. Also the state-of-the-art studios and getting to talk about sport all day, whilst learning at the same time!
What will you be learning and working on throughout your apprenticeship?
I’ll be working in three different departments at the station – social media, live broadcasting and audio production. I’ll be learning about the core skills of journalism, production, writing social media posts, coming up with new ideas to have on radio shows that could entice a younger or older audience… The list of opportunities to learn is endless.
Why do you want to work at talkSPORT?
talkSPORT is a radio station I have listened to since I was only little. I love radio and I love sports. I’ve listened to it throughout my whole life in the morning when I wake up and when I go to bed. As an avid sports fan I live and breathe football, F1, cricket, boxing, golf just to name a few. Working in an environment where I can talk about sports all day every day is perfect for me, and a dream opportunity to be a part of a station that I love.
