The largest number of Journalism Diversity Fund applicants will be interviewed by three separate panels of editors and senior journalists this week.
19 applicants from across the UK will be interviewed at the Financial Times, Southwark Bridge, London on Friday 11 June.
The 19 shortlisted for interview were drawn from 51 applications to the fund created to assist students on NCTJ-accredited journalism training courses.
The applicants were shortlisted by Jason Gibbins, editor, Banbury Guardian, and Brian Dodds, editor, Harborough Mail, who looked at the socially and ethnically diverse background of each applicant and their commitment and suitability to a career in journalism, which was backed up by examples of published work.
Sitting on the interview panels are Afua Hirsch, legal correspondent, the Guardian, Marcus Ryder, producer, BBC Scotland, Ian Patel, KoS Media, Hugh Carnegy, executive editor, Financial Times, Keith Stafford, freelance journalist, Lucy Bulmer, freelance magazine journalist, Dan Lee, journalism trainer, and Sean Dooley, media consultant.
The next deadline for applications to the Journalism Diversity Fund is Friday 30 June and application forms can be found at www.journalismdiversityfund.com
Applicants need to demonstrate the diverse voice they will bring to a newsroom, a genuine need for a bursary and must be accepted on an NCTJ-accredited journalism training course starting in early autumn or later.
They can be sixth-formers, undergraduates or mature students, but all will need to demonstrate a genuine commitment to journalism and the potential to be successful.
