13 Journalism Diversity Fund bursaries have been awarded this month, the largest ever number in a single cohort.
The successful fund applicants were chosen from 18 interviewed on Friday 11 June at the Financial Times in London, by three panels of editors and senior journalists.
The interview panels consisted of Hugh Carnegy, executive editor, Financial Times, Sean Dooley, media consultant, Afua Hirsch, legal correspondent, the Guardian, Dan Lee, media trainer, Ian Patel, KoS Media, Marcus Ryder, producer, BBC Scotland, and Keith Stafford, freelance journalist.
The bursaries will be used by the 13 successful applicants to help fund and assist their NCTJ-accredited journalism training courses.
Successful applicants to the fund will be attending NCTJ-accredited courses at Cardiff University, Glasgow Caledonian University, Lambeth College, News Associates Manchester, NoSWeat Journalism Training, Press Association, University of Salford, University of Sheffield and University of Ulster.
51 applications to the fund were received by the deadline of Friday 30 April, which were then shortlisted by Jason Gibbins, editor, Banbury Guardian, and Brian Dodds, editor, Harborough Mail. The shortlisted 18 candidates were then interviewed.

Applicants need to demonstrate the diverse voice they will bring to a newsroom, a genuine need for a bursary and must be accepted on an NCTJ-accredited journalism training course starting in early autumn or later.
They can be sixth-formers, undergraduates or mature students, but all will need to demonstrate a genuine commitment to journalism and the potential to be successful.
