Sixteen bursaries awarded in third JDF round of 2020

Sixteen bursaries have been awarded in the third Journalism Diversity Fund round of 2020, which marks the 15th anniversary of the fund.

These aspiring journalists were awarded funding to begin NCTJ-accredited courses in the 2020-21 academic year, and bursaries can help fund their course fees and/or living expenses.

Twenty-three shortlisted candidates were interviewed remotely on Thursday, 20 and Friday, 21 August. The interview panels included senior managers and editors from the NCTJ, Journalists’ Charity, ITV, Bloomberg, Reuters, The Thomas Read bursary, DMG Media, Financial Times, Reach plc, The Claire Prosser bursary and The Printing Charity.

Bursaries were awarded to:

  • Siham Ali, News Associates London
  • Jordan Beck, News Associates Manchester
  • Naomi Clarke, News Associates London
  • Lia Desai, The University of Sheffield
  • Daniel Fessahaye, News Associates London
  • Daniel Goldstraw, News Associates Manchester
  • Sophia Hall, News Associates London
  • Rory Jones, Glasgow Caledonian University
  • Dayna Latham, News Associates Manchester
  • Kasra Moradi, News Associates London

  • Libby Shaw, The University of Sheffield
  • Nevzat Savas, City of Wolverhampton College
  • Mesgana Sintayehu, News Associates London
  • Zeynel Yuce, News Associates London

At their interviews, the candidates were questioned on their passion for journalism, financial need and diversity.

The fund was set up in 2005 with a donation of £100,000 from NLA media access, with the aim of encouraging more diverse people to train as journalists and making newsrooms better reflect the communities they serve.

Thanks to the financial support of the industry, we have now awarded 396 bursaries since 2005.

Applications are now open for the fourth and final round of 2020, until Wednesday, 4 November.
