Sixth formers complete Certificate in Foundation Journalism

Sixth formers at Brighton Hove and Sussex Sixth Form College (BHASVIC) have completed the first ever NCTJ Certificate in Foundation Journalism with Brighton Journalist Works.
Year 13 students took the enrichment course as part of their final year at the college in Dyke Road, Hove.
A tutor from Brighton Journalist Works taught the first accredited basic course in the country by the industry training board, the National Council for Training of Journalists.
The 16 students studied a range of subjects such as interviewing, writing news and feature stories, reviews and digital media.
They wrote about issues ranging from democracy, the election to the reviews of films and music.
BHASVIC principal, Chris Thomson, whose brother Alex is a chief correspondent at Channel 4 news, praised the students for the amount of work they have completed in the 30 week course, taught by former national newspaper journalist Caroline Sutton.
Chris said:”I’m really impressed by the standard of work produced by the students.
“With this amount of experience they will be ahead of other students who want to get into the competitive but exciting world of journalism.”
As part of their course they produced a supplement for The Argus and their own website Room 165.
They have also had field trips including a visit to the wildlife photographer of the year exhibition at the Brighton Museum.
Their work will be featured on the RP&M blog.
Brighton Journalist Works managing director Paula O’Shea said: “It was fantastic to work with these talented young people, who now have high quality journalistic work on their CVs, which has been published in The Argus and on their beautiful website.”
The course has been so successful, BHASVIC is offering it to selected students at the college again next academic year.
