Student representatives connect with NCTJ team, editors and each other thanks to bespoke remote Student Council events

Student representatives have been able to meet with each other, quiz editors and give feedback to the NCTJ team thanks to a selection of remote Student Council events.

The NCTJ has been unable to run its annual Student Council conference in person this year due to Government restrictions, and has instead hosted three bespoke virtual events so far.

Students attended the events via Zoom according to which sector they are studying in: further education and independent courses, undergraduate, postgraduate, and as apprentices and community news reporters.

This has allowed the NCTJ to deliver a succinct and dedicated event to students in each sector, giving them the opportunity to connect with peers on similar courses.

Senior journalists and editors, representing roles in TV, magazines, radio, national and regional newspapers, digital and social media, have also joined the meetings to give advice to students.

Emma Robinson, accreditation manager at the NCTJ, said: “Connecting with our student representatives is a highlight of the NCTJ’s calendar and it’s been fantastic to still meet with these students through our virtual Student Council events.

“We have still been able to give students the opportunity to meet with each other, ask questions to the NCTJ team and feedback any concerns, as well as quizzing editors about starting careers in the journalism industry.”

The final Student Council event for apprentices and community news reporters will take place on Tuesday, 20 April from 10am to 12pm.
