Trainer to feature in travel writing anthology

A journalism trainer who leads two NCTJ distance learning courses is celebrating as his short story has been selected for publication in a new anthology of travel writing.

Fabian Acker, a journalist and sub-editor from East Dulwich, has just received news his short story The Game will be among 12 included in a new anthology of travel writing entitled Going Places, published by Bridge House this month.

Fabian writes a regular column on alternative energy for Hydropower & Dams magazine and it was on assignment in Mexico he first developed the idea for the short story.

Fabian said: I was on assignment with a group of journalists to write about water resources. I asked to leave the main party so I could talk to a farmer.

“I was dropped off at a farm, but the farmer didn’t speak English and I don’t speak Spanish. However, we got on very well together and at the end of the day he gave me a present of a little clay pot he found on the farm.

“I was going to take it back to England, but I had second thoughts about taking it from its native land. So the next day I buried it in Mexico where it belonged and the story is based on this experience.”

 In the past Fabian has been published in the Sunday Times as the Travel Writer of the Year and along with his regular column for Hydropower & Dams he also writes a regular amusing column for the Science Reporter.
