Walter Greenwood receives NCTJ Chairman’s award for outstanding contribution to training

Media law training guru, Walter Greenwood, has been honoured at the NCTJ Journalism Skills Conference by being presented with the 2010 NCTJ Chairman’s award.

Walter was unable to attend the conference to receive his award due to bad weather, however NCTJ chairman Kim Fletcher delivered a speech honouring Walter and his work.

Walter is one of the longest-serving contributors to the work of the NCTJ. He spent his first term on the North East regional committee as a youngster in the 1960s and was then Chairman of the NCTJ media law board in the 1970s. He was persuaded to return for a second term from 2004-06. 

He spent most of his career working for Thomson Regional Newspapers and Trinity Mirror and as a law training consultant for Press Association Training.

Walter was also an assistant editor at Thomson Regional Newspapers when he began co-editing McNae’s Essential Law for Journalists with Tom Welsh, which he did for 30 years.

NCTJ chairman Kim Fletcher paid tribute to Walter saying, “With modesty unusual in such a legendary industry figure, Walter remains hugely popular and treasured by all those involved closely in the NCTJ, journalism training and the industry.  I hope you will agree he is a worthy recipient of the 2010 NCTJ Chairman’s Award.”

Along with his award, Walter received an overnight stay at the Brooklands Hotel, a new, Art Deco-inspired, four-star spa hotel in Weybridge, Surrey. The stay for two people, which was kindly donated by the hotel, includes a suite, breakfast and dinner.
