Leadership and Management for Journalists

This level 7 qualification in leadership and management is designed for current and future editorial executives.

This higher-level qualification aims to enhance and improve the quality of leadership and management across the industry, creating more effective editorial leaders and managers trained to an industry standard.

It provides in-depth knowledge, skills and behaviours to enable learners to succeed as leaders and managers in the media industry.

It is designed to meet the needs of employers and to provide quality training in leadership and management skills and techniques that are relevant and tailored to editorial executives across the industry.

The qualification is assessed by an online exam and a portfolio of evidence.

Qualification structure

The syllabus includes a range of study areas including: leading the team; operations; change management; strategy; innovation and creativity; workplace wellbeing and communication. Learners will need to complete all seven areas of study to progress to the online exam while compiling a portfolio of evidence during their training.

Eligibility

The target audience for this qualification is early-career editorial managers. Learners should have approximately two to three years of experience in journalism and will preferably have experience of managing others, although this is not essential if they are identified as being future editorial leaders.

It is recommended that learners have completed the NCTJ’s senior qualification, the Level 6 National Qualification in Journalism (NQJ). The NQJ can be entered for after 18 months employment within the industry (or a minimum of 12 months in exceptional circumstances). Individual employer requirements may also apply.

Exam dates are offered twice a year in November and June.
